Grounding

Grounding is the most important factor in your home’s electrical system. Electricity needs two wires to travel in, one to the load (light or appliance)and one return wire to complete the circuit back to the source. The wire to the load is called the hotwire. The return is called the ground or neutral wire, because it ultimately goes all the way back to an earth ground at the main service entrance. That ground is part of every electrical power system. If any circuit inside your home lacks grounding, loads on that circuit work poorly or not at all. Worse, you could receive a severe or even fatal shock.
